MAKSUTOV-CASSEGRAIN TELESCOPES

A Maksutov-Cassegrain (Mak) telescope differs from its Schmidt-Cassegrain cousin because of its relatively thick, deeply curved "Meniscus" corrector lens at the front of the telescope. compared to the relatively thin "Meniscus" on a Schmidt-Cassegrain.  The Mak's miniscus reduces spherical abberation in the telescope by focusing light rays more tightly.  The Mak is a superb instrument for viewing planets, the sun (when properly filtered) or the moon. The views through a Mak are very similar in detail and clarity to the finest similar aperture apochromatic refractor but are about 1/3 or less the physical length!  The field of view, however, is substantially smaller in a Mak than an apochromatic refractor so it is limited when it comes to astrophotography.  The Mak also requires substantial "cool-down" time to achieve ambient (same as the outside)  temperatures and the views do suffer until that temperature level is reached.
