Our OBSERVATORY and the DR. ROBERT M.GLASS STARPORT is open
to the public over two hundred nights a year. The Observatory is
open every day during the summer months for public solar viewing and
nearly every night for a night sky exploring. Throughout the rest
of the year, the Observatory is available for public and school group
field trips by reservation. During designated times and when
weather allows, both solar and night time viewing is available as
well.
Each year, we attend several star parties, rocket launches and
astronomy club meetings. At these events we sell astronomy
equipment to help fund our educational programs. We also attend a
number of public engagements throughout the year, where we speak and
demonstrate equipment at schools, libraries, a local Eagle Watch and
others to share the daytime and night sky with the public.
Our Observatory has a fourteen foot rotating dome and a 36 x 48 foot
roll off roof starport.
The dome houses our 20" research quality Ritchey Chretian
telescope on its custom mount. There is a 46" monitor to
display both live eyepiece views and feed from the NASA channel.
The dome is wired to the warm room for advanced astrophotography
using the variety of cameras which have been donated to the
Observatory. The dome room has original artwork by well-known
Space Artist, John Foster on the walls.
The Starport features seven permanently mounted telescopes, five on
piers, including a 14" Celestron SCT, an 11" SCT, a 9.25" SCT, a 12"
Newtonian, an 18" JMI Newtonian, a TV 102 mounted side by side with a
90 mm Coronado Double Stack H-alpha solar scope. We also store
several Orion Intelliscope Dobsonian and another 11" Celestron SCT
Ultima for use outside of the facility. There is a warm
room/equipment room where we store state of the art eyepieces,
cameras and smaller telescopes.
Behind the Starport is our outdoor amphitheater or "dob farm" used to
roll out Dobsonian Telescopes for hands-on use. Visitors are
welcome to bring their own telescopes and use that area for viewing
and
astrophotography. Power is available.
