TELRAD

telrad
The Telrad is perhaps the single most useful tool to the beginning amateur. It is a simple 1 X finder scope that mounts to almost any telescope. It allows you to aim the telescope with both eyes open, and without reversing the image. It is a cinch to align with your telescope, a task that can take most of the night with cheap finder scopes. It projects three red circles into space, allowing you to center the scope on the moon, bright stars or planets. The Telrad isn't small at 8 inches long and 11 ounces so on a small telescope we do have other choices.  However, on virtually all dobsonian sales through the Observatory, we include a Telrad at no extra charge.  That's because we use the Telrad on the majority of our telescopes.  It is a most useful tool and there are even books published using the Telrad pattern as an aid to find Deep Sky Objects. The books, made of laminated paper show the Telrad "bullseye" placed upon bright stars so that starhopping to the object you are trying to located is a breeze.
